  • Artist Talk: Working in Found Materials

Artist Talk: Working in Found Materials

Sample event post for layout testing. A sculptor who builds large-scale work from salvaged wood, metal, and industrial scrap will talk about where the materials come from, how a piece takes shape, and what it means to give discarded objects a second life as art.

The talk will include images from the artist’s studio, a look at several works in progress, and a few pieces brought in especially for the evening. Expect stories about scrapyards, barn teardowns, and the occasional object that refused to become anything at all.

The talk begins at 7:00 p.m. and runs about forty-five minutes, followed by open questions and conversation. Seating is first come, first served. Admission is free, and donations to support future programming are appreciated.

This event is part of an ongoing series of conversations with working artists about process, materials, and the realities of making art for a living.

  • Open Studio: Printmaking Demonstration

    Open Studio: Printmaking Demonstration

Sample event post for layout testing. Spend a Saturday afternoon watching a working printmaker pull relief and monotype prints from start to finish. Our visiting artist will walk through carving a block, inking, registration, and the hand-pressing process, and talk about how printmakers plan an image in reverse.

Visitors are welcome to come and go throughout the afternoon. There will be a small hands-on table where you can try inking and pressing a pre-carved block and take home your own print. All materials are provided, and no experience is needed.

The demonstration runs from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Space at the hands-on table is limited at any one time, so there may be a short wait during busy stretches. Families are welcome; children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult at the press.

Finished prints by the visiting artist will be on display in the front room, and a limited edition created during the demonstration will be signed and numbered at the end of the day.

  • Winter Members’ Show Opening Night

    Winter Members’ Show Opening Night

Sample event post for layout testing. Join us for the opening night of the Winter Members’ Show, featuring new work from more than a dozen regional artists working in paint, print, ceramics, and mixed media. The evening is free and open to the public, with light refreshments and a chance to meet many of the artists in person.

This year’s show centers on the theme of “slow light,” the low, warm light of a Michigan winter afternoon, and the ways artists capture stillness, shadow, and reflection. Some pieces take the theme literally with snowy landscapes and long interior shadows; others interpret it more loosely through texture, color, and pace.

Doors open at 6:00 p.m., with brief remarks from the curators at 7:00. Street parking is available along Water Street and in the public lot behind the building. The gallery is on one level and is wheelchair accessible.

The show will remain on display for six weeks following the opening. Selected works may be available for purchase; ask a gallery host for details during your visit.
